Video cameras are the watchdogs of the world. Where criminals would usually have free access, video cameras, both hidden and visible throw floods of fear on would-be intruders. It's one thing in court for them to lie about where they were that night. It's quite something else trying to lie about a video of them doing what they are charged with.
Video surveillance is relatively new and the technology is changing rapidly. If you've bought an electronic wrist watch in the last year, you have more computing power on your wrist than the command modules of the astronauts that circled and landed on the moon.
Not long ago, you had no choice, but to have the cameras wired together or all wired to a central console. This was very expensive and had to be installed by professionals. Now, you can buy wireless cameras that can be mounted anywhere by anyone that can handle a screwdriver. Some of these units have their own pedestal. They don't even have to be screwed in!
The wireless technology is so advanced that the cameras have a range of 500 feet. If you want to spend the money, you can buy video cameras with a range of up to double that.
Like the human eye, video surveillance cameras are affected by the intensity of light, by moisture and chemicals in the air. Special hazardous environment cameras can be bought for industrial purposes, but for the home, you don't have to worry about these cumbersome units.
Your home cameras will have to deal with darkness and moisture, however. Any good surveillance camera kit with have at least one night vision camera. This is another example of technology racing forward. Not long ago, only the military could afford these. Now, they are readily available and better than anything they used in Viet Nam.
Outdoor video cameras come in waterproof cases. They also usually come with the night vision feature although you should always check the manufacturer's literature to double check.
Some security cameras are made to be boldly displayed so that anyone going into its field of view will know they are being watched. Other cameras are disguised as household articles. Some people use them for intruder watching. Others use them to keep an eye on employees like the famous Nanny Cameras.
Security cameras are wonders of technology. With a little research and a very modest investment, you will add immensely to your peace of mind and the security of your home and business.
